Jury Chosen For Derek Chauvin Trial
Yesterday, jury selection for Derek Chauvin’s trial in the death of George Floyd was completed. Out of the 15 people, 6 are men and 9 are women. 9 are white, 4 are African American and two are mixed race. Selection began March 9th at the Hennepin County Government Center and took two weeks. The panel will ultimately be made up of 12 jurors and two alternates meaning one of the selected jurors will be excused before the trial begins. Floyd’s final moments were captured on video and his death led to protests against police brutality and racism under the Black Lives Matter movement. Chauvin has pleaded not guilty to second-degree unintentional murder and second-degree manslaughter charges. He also pleaded not guilty to third-degree murder which was reinstated in the case on March 11th. If convicted, Chauvin could face up to 40 years in prison for second degree murder, 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter. Opening statements are expected to start this Monday.
