Derek Chauvin’s Defense Attorney Asks For Delay Of Trial
Derek Chauvin’s defense attorney has asked for a delay in light of a settlement between Minneapolis and George Floyd’s family. During a hearing yesterday, Eric Nelson said he was concerned by the announcement of the $27 million civil settlement and called it ‘incredibly prejudicial’. Adding that the court should consider their request to delay the trial and move it outside of Hennepin County. He’s also asked for re-questioning of jurors that had already been selected. The request came at the beginning of the second week of jury selection. So far, 7 jurors have been selected out of the 14 needed which includes two alternates. Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin is accused of killing George Floyd. Floyd’s final moments were recorded on video and led to protests against police brutality and racism, looting and incidents of unrest in the black live matter movement. Chauvin has pleaded not guilty to second-degree unintentional murder, second degree manslaughter and just last week, third-degree murder. Testimony in the trial is scheduled to start no earlier than March 29th.
