One Juror Dismissed From George Floyd Trial Over Safety Concerns
The trial for the former Minneapolis officer accused of killing George Floyd has been underway for several days now. Derek Chauvin faces second-degree murder, manslaughter, and a newly reinstated third-degree murder charge in relation to the death of Floyd while in police custody on May 25th. The judicial proceedings have begun with the jury selection, which has already proven to be an arduous process seeing as there are few people who were not in some way affected by Floyd’s passing. Five jurors have so far been chosen to serve on the panel. There were six, however one juror was dismissed after voicing concerns over the possibility of his name being released during the trial. The unnamed man was worried if that were to ever happen, rioters may descend upon his home, or worse, come after his wife and children. The whole selection process is expected to take around 3 weeks and will conclude once 14 people, 12 jurors and two alternates, are seated. Opening statements will begin no sooner than March 29th.
