Biden to Sign Executive Orders Today Promoting Gender Equality
In honor of International Women’s Day, President Biden will sign two new executive orders targeting gender equality. One executive order deals with advancing policies to guarantee education free from sexual violence. The U.S. Education Department will have to review all of its existing regulations, orders, guidance and policies to ensure it is consistent with the Biden Administration’s current policy. It also orders them to re-evaluate a Title IX regulation issued under the the Trump Administration that expanded protections for those accused of campus sexual harassment and assault. The second order establishes the White House Gender Policy Council. They will be solely tasked with fighting systemic bias and discrimination. This includes sexual harassment, structural barriers for women in the work force, wage and wealth gaps, health care, equal opportunity in leadership and promoting gender equality worldwide through diplomacy. A Biden official said the council will help protect not only women, but all “those who experience multiple forms of discrimination including people of color” and those in the LGBTQ+ community.
