Capitol Police Request that National Guard Presence Continue for Next 60 Days
U.S. Capitol Police have requested the National Guard remain in Washington, D.C., for at least another two months. This follows yesterday’s scare that prompted federal agents to be on high alert. They received warnings of violent militia extremists who discussed plans to take control of the Capitol and remove Democratic lawmakers, encouraging thousands to join them. A conspiracy theory circulating online led some to believe that March 4th marked the true Inauguration Day and that President Trump would assume the presidency again. The threat was taken so seriously, that the House rearranged their schedule to avoid working in the building that day. Fortunately, nothing happened. But U.S. Capitol Police are still asking for additional National Guard troops to hang around D.C. for the next 60 days. They’ve requested a reduced presence, but a presence nonetheless, as concerns persist of more potential violence at the Capitol building. Their request is currently under review at the Pentagon.
