Superintendent Asks SC House Not to Pass Transgender Sports Ban Bill

South Carolina State Superintendent Molly Spearman made a surprise appearance at a state house subcommittee hearing yesterday. A bill is currently being considered that would ban transgender students from playing on girls sports teams in middle and high school. The superintendent asked the house not to pass the bill, claiming it does not protect transgender students. She further believes her and the South Carolina High School League can handle any situations on an individual basis. SC for Ed has also expressed its opposition to the bill. Despite their attempts, the subcommittee voted 3-1 in favor of the proposal. It now moves to the full house judiciary committee.
