SCOTUS to Rule on Voting Rights Act Laws that Could Impact the Country

The United States Supreme Court is convening tomorrow to discuss a voting rights act dispute that may impact the nation. Two Arizona laws are potentially at stake which includes the requirement that election officials reject ballots cast in the wrong precincts and another that says that only the voter, a family member or a car-giver can collect and deliver a completed ballot by mail (which is intended to prevent voter fraud). But Democrats claim the laws often disenfranchise minorities as the state has a history of switching polling places more often in minority neighborhoods and can cause mistakes. Minority voters are also less likely to own homes and more likely to require assistance while voting. It’s further reported that Arizona rejects 11 times more ballots than any other state. Initially, an Arizona judge rejected the challenges, which were eventually overturned by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Now the issue will go before the Supreme Court. Their ruling could affect the outcome of numerous other election laws currently being fought across dozens of states.
