Security Officials Offer Their Explanations into How Capitol Riot Occurred
During yesterday’s joint Senate hearing, top security officials offered their explanations as to how the deadly Capitol insurrection occurred. Those who testified claimed that security and intelligence failings are to blame for the riot. Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund said reports compiled by Capitol Police, the FBI, the Secret Service, the Department of Homeland Security and Washington Metropolitan Police showed little to no probability of civil disobedience or arrests occurring on January 6th. This was despite significant online talk and media reports detailing a potential attack. An email from the FBI was also apparently mistaken as a simple warning. Sund believed if it there was a legitimate threat, they should have received a phone call or more. Other security officials claim they never even saw the email. A slow response from the federal government is also said to be at fault. Once the Capitol was stormed by the mob, Sund said requests for back up from the National Guard were extremely delayed.
