Senate Holds First Investigative Hearing into Capitol Riot Today
The Senate is holding their first public hearing today on the Capitol insurrection which took place over a month and a half ago. The effects of the January 6th riot are still being felt today, especially in Washington, D.C., where additional security measures, protective fencing, and hundreds of national guard troops are still in place. It left 5 dead and 140 officers injured. So far, the FBI’s nationwide manhunt has landed at least 238 people with federal charges. 400 more investigations are also being conducted, including into almost 30 Capitol officers. Six of them have been suspended with pay for the time being. Today marks the first joint senate hearing into the incident. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and The Rules and Administration Committee will question top officials responsible for security at the Capitol that day, including 3 who immediately resigned following the riot, as well as the Metropolitan Police Department’s acting chief who provided back up. Law enforcement officials will further examine the various security failures that led to the breach.
