Pelosi Calls for Independent Commission Investigation into Capitol Riot

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for a ‘9-11 style’ investigation into the January 6th riot on the Capitol. In a letter to House Democrats, Pelosi advocated for Congress to establish an independent commission to look into the deadly attack. Their mission will be to “investigate and report on the facts and causes” of the attack; “the interference with the peaceful transfer of power”; and the “preparedness and response” of both the capitol police and other branches of law enforcement. Lawmakers were further urged to appropriate additional funds for better House member security based on an initial report conducted by Lieutenant General Honoré. Some Republicans have voiced their support for the independent investigation. This all comes just a few days after President Trump was acquitted by the Senate for his alleged incitement of the riot. However, many still lay blame on the former president for what happened, including Senator Mitch McConnell who said “President Trump is still liable for everything he did while he was in office. He didn’t get away with anything yet.”
