House Impeachment Managers Showed Senators Unseen Video of Insurrection
In their first full day of arguments for the case against former President Trump, house impeachment managers showed senators unseen video of the deadly insurrection at the capitol on January 6th. The managers put together a timeline in an attempt to draw a direct line between the months of rhetoric from former President Trump and the events that took place at the capitol. They relied on some never-before-seen video footage from capitol security cameras and other resources to show just how close rioters came to the U.S. senators and to former Vice President Pence. After seeing the video, Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski called the footage disturbing and said she was unaware of some of the things that went on that day.
Capitol police officer Eugene Goodman can be seen on surveillance footage sprinting down a hallway to meet the rioters as they breached the doors, instructing Mitt Romney to get to safety. Romney said he did not know how close he had been to the mob. Other videos showed Pence being ushered to safety as well as rioters attacking capitol police officers. Some republican senators said the presentation did a good job at connecting Trump’s words and his supporters’ actions. But still, most GOP senators have made it clear they’re going to vote to acquit, including Senator Lindsay Graham.
