2nd Senate Impeachment Trial of Trump Now Underway
After weeks of anticipation, the second Senate impeachment trial of former President Trump will begin today. The trial will begin this afternoon with four hours of debates by each legal team. This will then be followed by a vote to determine the constitutionality of a trial against a president who has already left office. All that’s needed to proceed is a simple majority. It’s likely to be approved as the Senate has already voted 55 to 45 in favor of holding the trial, with five Republicans joining Democrats in that vote. The rest of the week will be filled with more arguments. Each side is granted up to 16 hours spread out over two days of arguments, starting with the House managers. A possible break is expected from Friday afternoon into Sunday before resuming on Monday. After the arguments conclude, there will be up to four hours of Q&A by Senators for each legal team, after which witnesses can be subpoenaed for questioning. To close out the trial, each side will have up to four hours in closing arguments. A sentence will be delivered after the Senators meet to deliberate and vote.
