Trump Rejects Calls to Testify in Senate Impeachment Trial
President Trump has rejected calls to testify at his own Senate impeachment trial next week. The trial will be in fill swing on Tuesday. The former president is currently charged with one article of impeachment, alleging he was responsible for inciting the deadly January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. House Democrats asked Trump to testify under oath and be cross-examined yesterday. Democratic Representative and impeachment manager leader Jamie Raskin said they specifically wanted the president to explain in his own words why they so heavily disputed the results of the election. However, Democrats do not hold any power to be able to force the president to give a testimony. Trump Advisor Jason Miller dismissed the proceedings as “unconstitutional” and announced on behalf of the former president that he would reject those calls by Democrats. Trump’s lawyers also denounced it as a “public relations stunt.” It’s believed Democrats will attempt to use this refusal as part of their argument that the ex-president avoids responsibility for his actions.
