Capitol Officer Killed During Insurrection Laid to Rest in Rotunda
The officer killed during the insurrection at the U.S. Capital now lies in honor at the Rotunda. Brian Sicknick died after being struck in the head with a fire extinguisher while he was physically engaging with rioters on January 6th. The blow to his head didn’t take full effect until later when he collapsed after returning to his division. He was hospitalized but unfortunately passed away the next day at the age of 42. Sicknick had served with the Capitol Police since 2008 and was one of five people who died during the raid. Last night, dozens of Capitol Police officers stood at attention and remembered Sicknick’s sacrifice as his urn was carried up the steps of the rotunda. He was laid in honor there and visited by President Biden, as well as notable congressional leaders. Sicknick is the fifth person to receive this honor, which is solely designated for those who are not elected officials, judges or military leaders. The building is currently cutoff from the public, surrounded by National Guard and a large metal fence.
