Arguments Submitted Days Before Senate Impeachment Trial
The pretrial arguments in the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump have been submitted. House managers filed their 80-page memorandum yesterday, laying out the terms for why they believe the former president should be impeached. They claim he’s responsible for the events that occurred on January 6th at the Capitol, stating “his conduct endangered the life of every single member of Congress, jeopardized the peaceful transition of power and line of succession, and compromised our national security.” Despite Trump no longer holding office, they believe he still can and should be tried for his alleged crimes. The former president’s new legal team took a constitutional approach against impeachment in their 14-page brief. They mainly argue since the president is no longer in office, he cannot be removed. They also strongly deny he had any hand in the Capitol insurrection, intended to interfere in the election, or that he violated his oath of office at all. They also state anything the president said was well within his first amendment rights. They are seeking an acquittal from the Senate.
