Nitrogen Leak at Georgia Food Plant Kills at Least Six People
A liquid nitrogen leak at a Georgia food packing plant has killed at least six people. Yesterday morning, police arrived at the Foundation Food Group plant in Gainesville for reports of burns. Within minutes, that call had been updated to a hazardous materials response. It’s believed a nitrogen line ruptured inside the building and soon after many of the evacuated employees began experiencing ‘medical emergencies’. At least five people died at the facility and a sixth at the hospital. Their identities remain unknown. At least 100 people were potentially exposed and 12 were hospitalized. Three people are still in critical condition and three others were treated and released. Five more people are said to be in ‘fair condition’. They include employees of the plant and one fire fighter who is expected to recover. All their conditions are reportedly “respiratory in nature.” The cause of the leak is still unknown as the state fire marshal and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigate.
