Deadly, Destructive Tornado Blows Through Alabama

A large tornado that tore through Alabama late last night has killed at least one person and caused other significant damage. Residents of Birmingham and the surrounding areas were given minutes notice of the natural disaster before it occurred. One young man died after being trapped in his basement. More potential fatalities could be announced as there are people still trapped inside their homes whose conditions are currently unknown. Many more were hurt, with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Around five people have been hospitalized. Search and rescue missions are still underway as they survey the damage. Multiple power lines are down, trees have fallen onto houses, debris is littered everywhere, and vehicles and buildings have been destroyed. The tornado also caused significant road dangers. As tornado warnings remain in effect for areas of Alabama and Georgia, at least 11 schools are closed. This all comes the same time that severe winter weather is impacting the Central Plains through the mid-Atlantic Coast.
