House Sends Impeachment Article Against Trump to Senate

House democrats are set to deliver the articles of impeachment against former President Trump to the Senate today.
This move would have formally started Trump’s second impeachment trial, but on Friday Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell agreed to delay it until February 9th. This gives the House impeachment managers and Trump’s legal team two weeks to prepare for the trial. The former President is accused of “incitement of insurrection” in the January 6th breach of the capitol building by his supporters. But, more republican senators say they oppose holding an impeachment trial. Florida Senator Marco Rubio called the trial counterproductive and said quote “the first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it” because he believes it would be bad for the country and further inflame partisan divisions. Democrats say the extra days will allow for more evidence to come out about the riot, while republicans hope to craft a unified defense for Trump.
