Busy Weeks Ahead for Senate as they Juggle Several Major Issues
The next few weeks will be rather busy for Congress as they juggle multiple important issues. On top of Cabinet member confirmation hearings, they find themselves faced with the impeachment of President Trump. The articles will be sent to the Senate on Monday, meaning a trial could begin as early as Tuesday. But Republicans want to delay proceedings until at least mid-February, arguing it will give the former president time to prepare a defense. Some Democrats also back this, saying it will give them time to confirm more Cabinet members, too. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is reviewing the request. On top of this, seven Senate Democrats have now also filed an ethics complaint against Republican Senators Josh Hawley of Missouri and Ted Cruz of Texas. They’re calling for the Ethics Committee to investigate how their objections to the Electoral College votes may have contributed to inciting the Capitol riot. They want Hawley and Cruz to receive disciplinary repercussions “including up to expulsion or censure.” Hawley said this was just “a flagrant abuse of the Senate ethics process and a flagrant attempt to exact partisan revenge.”
