Vice President Harris to Swear in 3 New Democratic Senators Today
Also happening today, is the swearing in of the new Senate members. Following her own inauguration, Vice President Kamala Harris will swear in three new Democratic senators. It will evenly split the Senate, with Harris deciding any tie-breaking votes. It’s the first time Democrats will have control of the Senate since 2014. Harris will be swearing in her own successor, Alex Padilla, who was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom. He will become California’s first Latino senator. Joining him will be Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff who succeeded incumbent Republican opponents after highly contentious runoff elections in Georgia. Their wins are historic in several ways as Warnock will become the first black senator to represent Georgia, and Ossoff the first Jewish man. Ossoff, at 33, will also become the current youngest senator in the chamber. He’s the youngest Democrat to serve in the Senate since President Biden was sworn into the chamber at the age of 30 in 1973.
