President Trump to Grant Upwards of 100 Pardons, Commutations Today
President Trump has intentions of pardoning and commuting the sentences of nearly 100 people today. Presidential 11th hour pardons are not unusual, and certainly won’t be the highest number ever seen. Former President Obama pardoned or commuted the sentences of a record 330 people his last day in office. But unlike former presidents, Trump has been known to bypass the DOJ’s system when selecting his picks, instead being petitioned from people directly. With less than 24 hours left to his presidency, he’s already received a slew of requests from allies, lobbyists, capitol rioters and more. The president has previously pardoned the likes of people such as Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, Both who were former associates of the president and believe they may have been wrongfully convicted. The president has also pardoned people who have familial ties to himself, such as Jared Kushner’s father, and even celebrities. Today’s lineup is expected to be much of the same, including a mix of pardons for justice reform, white collar criminals, high-profile rappers and more.
