Pelosi Imposes Fines on Congresspeople Who Defy New Safety Measures

Following the insurrection, new security measures have been introduced to the Capitol. The most noticeable change was arguably the introduction of metal detectors at the building’s entrance. But not everyone is on board. It’s been reported that several Republicans are upset by the “inadequate notice and consultation” and some have gone so far as to refuse to comply with the procedure this week. It’s believed the matter has led to tense exchanges between lawmakers and Capitol Police. In response, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced intentions to adopt new rules in order to keep everyone safe. Starting January 21st, anyone unwilling to comply will have $5,000 deducted from their pay for a first-time offense, and $10,000 for a second. House Democrats have also imposed another new rule this week that issues $500 fines for those who do not wear masks while on the floor after several members of Congress contracted Covid-19 from colleagues during the riot.
