House Vote to Impeach President Trump Now Underway

The House vote to impeach President Trump for a unprecedented second time is now underway. This comes a day after the House approved a resolution calling for Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. However, he made it clear he will not do so, telling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a letter last night that it was not “in the best interest of our nation or consistent with our constitution.” In response, the House immediately moved forward with their impeachment efforts. President Trump is facing a single article, charging him with incitement of violence over the Capitol riot last week.  The only difference for impeachment proceedings this time around is growing support from Republicans. No House Republicans voted for impeachment last January, but now it’s believed upwards of 30 may join with Democrats. It’s still an uphill battle in the Senate, where it was blocked last year. But now it appears Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell may also be on board with removing the president, suggesting it may help the GOP move on from Trump’s influence.
