Democratic Win Leaves One Senate Seat Left in Contested Georgia Runoffs
The Georgia Senate runoff election has come down to just one seat as news media outlets made their first projection overnight. With 98% of the votes tallied, Democratic candidate Reverend Raphael Warnock is expected to succeed incumbent Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler. Warnock is now set to become Georgia’s first black senator, and the eleventh in all of U.S. history. Now the fate of the Senate comes down to just one remaining seat. Currently Democrat John Ossoff is leading by a slim margin ahead of incumbent Republican David Perdue. The race is too close to call. Georgia’s runoff was historic as more than three million registered voters sent in early ballots. It smashed numbers set during the general election, with record-breaking voting turnout from people of color. Funding for this runoff election was also unprecedented as more than half a billion dollars have been poured into advertising since November. Republicans need this seat if they want to maintain power for the next two years.
