Georgia Runoff Elections to Determine Senate Control Take Place Today
The long anticipated Georgia runoff election to determined who controls the Senate is taking place today. Republicans currently hold 52 of the 100 seats in the nation’s Senate and therefore hold power. However, if both Democrats beat their incumbent Republican opponents today the Senate will be evenly split, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris deciding tie breakers. With Democrats holding the House of Representatives, and Democrats expected to move into the White House in less than a few weeks, President-elect Biden will be able to push through his agenda largely unopposed. Key issues such as stimulus checks, health care, environmental regulations, cabinet positions, and more are at currently at stake. Already 3 million early ballots have been cast with polls expected to cut off lines at midnight. Last night, Biden was campaigning in Atlanta on behalf of the Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and the Reverend Raphael Warnock. Meanwhile, President Trump visited Dalton to promote Republican Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. It should be noted that a Democrat has not won a Senate race in Georgia in 20 years.
