Trump Will Fight Election Results Even After ‘Safe Harbor’ Date Concludes
Today marks an important date in the certification of the 2020 election results. December 8th is also known as Safe Harbor day during election years. As decreed in the Constitution, the Electoral College must formally cast their votes on “the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December” which is this Monday. Those votes must then arrive in Washington, D.C by December 23rd with a formal congressional count on January 6th. But prior to all this, is Safe Harbor day where federal law allows state’s to finalize their selection six days before the official college vote. It’s not a requirement but if states choose to participate, their results cannot be challenged in court or in Congress after. This could effectively halt President Trump’s relentless legal efforts to overturn results in several battleground states as soon as today. Despite the significance of this day, the president continues to signal this fight is still not over and that he will contest results through January 6th.
