Contentious Georgia Senate Runoffs Now Less Than a Month Away

The recently passed marijuana bill in the House is one major example of why this year’s Georgia Senate runoff is so important. While Democrats maintain majority in the House, Republicans dominate the Senate. This power dynamic has created serious divide and led many House-proposed bills to be rejected in the Senate. While Republicans were hoping to maintain their hold this year, the results of the general election have so far resulted in a tie. There are only two seats up for grabs and both are in Georgia where things were too close to call following November 3rd. Last night was the most recent debate in the highly contested runoff where the race has come down to two incumbent Republican senators with Democratic opponents. If Democrats win both seats they’ll be tied in the Senate with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris stepping in to cast tie breaking votes. Democrats will essentially hold power across the board and be able to pass any laws they want without much opposition. The official vote will be held January 5th.
