President Trump Threatens to Veto Defense Bill Unless Section 230 Removed
President Trump has suggested he’ll veto the National Defense Authorization Act unless one section is terminated. In a tweet late last night, the president said he’d scrap the defense bill unless Congress agreed to repeal section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act. Critics of this section believe it unfairly protects social media platforms from liability over items posted on their platforms. The president believes they are a serious threat to national security and that “our country can never be safe and secure if we allow it to stand.” While some are looking to clarify the language, others support the president’s desire to have the whole thing terminated. In recent months, CEO’s of big tech companies including Apple, Facebook, Google and more have undergone intense questioning during several congressional hearings. It’s believed these companies abused their power by creating monopolies, disproportionately restricting speech, and potentially interfering with the election.
