Philadelphia Sees Second Night of Violence Following Fatal Shooting by Police
Philadelphia saw its second night of violent unrest following a fatal police-involved shooting earlier this week. Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old black man, was shot to death in a residential neighborhood after failing to comply with police orders to drop his weapon. It’s believed Wallace suffered from bipolar disorder and was in a crisis during the incident. His death sparked violence, looting, and fires across the city as hundreds of protesters took to the streets. Around 30 police officers were injured by thrown projectiles, and one broke her leg after being hit by a car. Over 90 people were arrested Monday night. Last night saw more of the same unrest. What started out as a large, peaceful gathering turned volatile near a police precinct. Crowds threw rocks, light bulbs, or bricks at officers, injuring at least one. More looting and damage was also witnessed. The National Guard has now been deployed to the city. During an official statement, Wallace’s father asked for peace, adding the looting and rioting does nothing to honor his son’s memory.
