Historic Turnout for Election Met With Instances of Voter Suppression

And speaking of the election, with less than two weeks to go, historic voting turnouts continue to be reported nationwide. More than 34 million total ballots have been cast as of yesterday, compared to 5.9 million by this same time in 2016. Several states have already reached over 40% of their 2016 voter turnout with Texas leading the charge at more than 4.6 million ballots cast. They’re closely followed by California, Florida and even some swing states. This election is predicted to not only have the largest voter turn out in history, but also the largest turn out of young voters. However, with the exciting news also comes the bad. There’s been numerous reports of alleged voter suppression. In LA County, an investigation is now underway after a ballot box was set on fire. Law enforcement is also now getting involved in Florida and Alaska after residents received threatening emails to “Vote for Trump, or else!” And in Tennessee, an election official was fired for turning away voters wearing “Black Lives Matter” shirts.
