Six Russian Military Hackers Indicted for Numerous Major Global Attacks
Six Russian military hackers were indicted yesterday in connection to some of the biggest global cyber attacks in history. The Department of Justice made the announcement yesterday with Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers saying “no country has weaponized its cyber-capabilities as maliciously and irresponsibly as Russia”. The six men in question are current and former members of GRU, which is Russia’s military intelligence service. They’re believed to be responsible for attacks starting in November of 2015 through at least October of 2019. This includes alleged hits against Ukraine’s power grid and top financial leaders; a malware attack that infected computers globally, including places in the U.S.; and the Olympic Destroyer attack during the 2018 Olympics after Russian athletes were banned from competing for doping. It also includes attempts to spearphish campaigns against the French president, the French government, and French politicians before their 2017 elections. But according to the DOJ, allegations against them do not include possible interference in the 2016 U.S. election.
