Voting, Mailing, Registration Issues Cast Doubts Over Election Integrity
The countdown is on for election day but people’s faith in the system appears to be waning as more states report serious issues. In Virginia yesterday, during their final day to register, the state’s entire online system went down. It’s believed a data connection was accidentally cut which resulted in the multi-hour power outage. The system has since been restored and voting rights groups have already teamed up to file a lawsuit demanding a 48 hour extension. Governor Ralph Northam said he would look into it but does not have the unilateral authority to do so. Meanwhile in Pennsylvania, the USPS is once again in hot water after trash bags of undelivered mail were discovered outside an employee’s home. The mailing system’s reputation has already deteriorated over the last few months after the post master general was forced to stand trial for his questionable financial moves. With the pandemic looming, a record breaking number of citizens are expected to vote by mail. But recent changes have caused substantial delays that may also negatively impact the election.
