Pelosi Proposes New Legislation in Possible Effort to Invoke 25th Amendment
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is looking to invoke the 25th Amendment as President Trump recovers from the coronavirus. The 25th details procedures for replacing the president in the event he’s unable to fulfill his duties by temporarily transferring power to the vice president. The 25th has only been invoked a few times in recent modern history. In 2002, President George W. Bush used it just prior to undergoing a colonoscopy. President Ronald Reagan invoked it in 1985 before also undergoing a medical procedure to have a tumor removed. In a dramatic announcement this morning, Pelosi and Representative Jamie Raskin unveiled a new bill to establish a congressional commission that would determine whether or not President Trump is fit to serve. Although Congress is limited in their powers, the 25th Amendment does grant them this ability. Pelosi suggested the combination of experimental drugs he’s currently receiving is severely impairing his leadership, however the president and his doctors remain adamant about the fact that he’s doing very well and is ready to leave isolation this weekend.
