House Passes New $2.2 Trillion Stimulus Package Without Bipartisan Support
Days after unveiling their new $2.2 trillion stimulus package deal, the House of Representatives has also approved it. While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said her and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are still in talks to come to some sort of agreement, the measure was passed despite not having bipartisan support. Eighteen Democrats voted against the bill, along with every single Republican, bringing the final vote count to 214 to 207. However, this bill is not likely to get passed through the Republican controlled Senate. On Wednesday, Republicans offered a counter proposal costing $1.6 trillion. It’s believed the parties still cannot agree on various issues such as direct payments, state and local government aid, funding for the post office, liability shields for businesses and schools, and more. While Pelosi said she remains hopeful for their bill, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley said passing “anything above $1 trillion would be difficult.”
