Government Shutdown Averted but Congress Still Fails to Come to Stimulus Agreement
President Trump passed a stopgap bill last night just hours before it’s expiration. Lawmakers approved the spending bill yesterday in an 84 to 10 vote. It’s meant to fund the government through December 11th, effectively ensuring they will remain open through the election. This was quickly followed by the president’s signature just hours before it’s midnight deadline. But this move is only temporary. Another continuing resolution must be approved or some sort of fiscal agreement reached before 2021. Meanwhile, the U.S. economy continues to suffer as a result of the pandemic. Following Disney Parks mass layoff announcement, American and United airlines also confirmed they would be forced to do the same. The companies combined intend to cut 32,000 jobs seeing as no new consensus has been reached on federal aid. And as people and companies continue to suffer, the House has decided to hold off on their recently proposed $2.2 trillion stimulus bill. They’re reportedly waiting for more bipartisan support before moving forward.
