Single Officer Indicted in Connection to Death of Breonna Taylor

One officer was indicted by a grand jury in connection to the death of Breonna Taylor yesterday afternoon. Three Louisville Metro officers entered her apartment on a no-knock warrant under the wrong assumption Taylor was connected to a narcotics investigation into her ex-boyfriend. They were unaware Taylor’s current and legally armed boyfriend was inside the residence at the time. He fired upon their entry, believing they were intruders, and struck Sergeant John Mattingly in the leg. The officers returned fire, hitting Taylor five times and killing her. In the end, no drugs were found at the scene. Former Officer Brett Hankinson was the only officer indicted. He faces three counts of wanton endangerment which are Class D felonies. It’s still unclear if Taylor’s death was a direct result of Hankinson “firing blindly” into the home. But it was determined his actions did endanger the lives of the man, pregnant woman, and child in the neighboring apartment at the time. He could receive up to 5 years for each charge. The Kentucky Attorney General also announced they’re launching a task force specifically designed to review the state’s search warrant procedures.
