President Trump’s Kenosha, WI Visit Met With Mixed Reactions
President Trump’s visit to Kenosha, Wisconsin garnered strong mixed reactions. Despite warnings from top state officials to stay away, the president toured the damage done to the city following the protests and riots over the shooting of Jacob Blake. In an address to the city, he condemned them as acts of “domestic terror.” He then announced he would provide nearly $1 million to Kenosha law enforcement for emergency support, $13 million to law enforcement agencies statewide, and $4 million for small businesses. Many were quick to praise him for his swift and divisive actions for a city in need. However, there are those who believe the president’s intentions were less than honorable. In his speech, he did not name Blake once or address the issue of systemic racism. He also failed to meet with the Blake family because they reportedly wanted lawyers present. He instead met with the family pastor. One person referred to the entire event as a glorified “photo-op.”
