Joe Kennedy III Loses Massachusetts Primary Ending Family’s Decades-Long Streak
History was made in the extremely divided Massachusetts Democratic Senate Primary last night. 39-year-old Representative Joe Kennedy III is the grandson of the late Senator and U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and grandnephew of the late President John F. Kennedy. Joe was predicted to be a favorite after launching his campaign a year ago but following an extremely close race, he has now become the first Kennedy to ever lose in Massachusetts since his family entered into politics 8 decades ago. In his concession speech to 74-year-old Ed Markey, Joe said “obviously these results were not the ones we were hoping for” but that he would “do it again in a heartbeat”. He further congratulated his opponent stating “The senator is a good man. You have never heard me say otherwise.” It’s unclear what Kennedy intends to do now, seeing as he forfeited his House seat last year in order to run for Senate.
