Athletes Demand Justice for Jacob Blake, Boycott Games
Athletes are boycotting their own games and demanding justice for the shooting of Jacob Blake. It all began when the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to participate in their playoff game. In an official statement the team said they’re “calling for justice for Jacob Blake and demand the officers be held accountable. Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action, so our focus today cannot be on basketball.” This was swiftly followed by an announcement from the NBA who said they would be postponing five other games in three different playoff series. Within a matter of hours, three WNBA, five major league soccer and three major league baseball games were also called off. Kenny Smith, a host of Inside the NBA also walked off set last night in solidarity. Unfortunately, strikes are still banned in the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, meaning numerous athletes are breaking their contracts to fight this racial injustice. A former NBA executive said the teams may be subjected to penalties as a result.
