FDA Approves Emergency Use of Potential Covid-19 Treatment Convalescent Plasma
President Trump has approved emergency use authorization of a new Covid-19 treatment, calling it a “major break through.” The treatment known as convalescent plasma has reportedly been used on more than 70,000 patients. The president described it as “a powerful therapy that transfuses strong antibodies from the blood of recovered patients to help treat patients battling a current infection.” The FDA finally decided to approve emergency use following criticism from the White House who accused them of potentially withholding the treatment for political reasons. While this sounds like positive news, there has been no concrete evidence recorded yet that confirms the treatment fights the coronavirus or how to best administer it. It’s reported more research will need to be done, however the FDA remains hopeful saying the benefits appear to “outweigh the known and potential risks of the product.”
