President Trump Posthumously Pardons Susan B. Anthony

President Trump posthumously pardoned Susan B. Anthony yesterday. The announcement was made the same day the
U.S. celebrated and remembered the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Anthony was considered a leader of the women’s suffrage movement and was found guilty of illegally voting in the 1872 presidential election. Unfortunately, Anthony died before she got to witness the ratification, which occurred on August 18th, 1920, 14 years after she had already passed away from pneumonia. The president said, alongside his wife Melania at a White House event, that he was “going to be signing a full and complete pardon” for Anthony. The president also referred to the move as “fantastic” and further added, “that’s what this is all about her. We have to have honest voting.” Many consider the gesture a symbolic move to encourage voters, specifically female voters, during a time when he is being accused of potential voter suppression with his lack of funding for the postal service.
