First Night of Democratic National Convention Full of Attacks on President Trump

Last night marked the start of the Democratic National Convention and featured speeches from many major celebrities and politicians. Most notably, was key note speaker Michelle Obama who is making headlines today for her 18-minute long impassioned and searing criticism of President Trump and his character. A portion of her time was dedicated to discussing the recent protests sparked following the death of George Floyd. She condemned the president for how he handled the situation, calling his leadership chaotic, divisive, and lacking in empathy. She even went so far as to say he’s “clearly in over his head”. Other notable sentiments she made included “if you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can.” The former first lady was also quoted saying, “let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can. Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country.” Another speaker who appeared to have a heavy, emotional impact was that of Kristin Urquiza. Her father, who was a Trump supporter, sadly lost his battle with Covid-19 in June. In a shocking moment she said her father’s “only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that, he paid with his life.” Those who also addressed the nation last night included Senator Bernie Sanders, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Senator Cory Booker, and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, all of whom also dedicated their time to issue similar heated attacks on the president. Last night, Eva Longoria also acted as emcee with Billy Porter performing the closing ceremony. Several more celebrities are also expected to participate in the coming days. On the schedule for tonight are several more speakers including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This will be followed by former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris officially accepting their party’s nomination. Meanwhile, President Trump appears to be unphased by his opponents remarks, even thanking Mrs. Obama for her “kind words” in a tweet this morning. He’s now focusing on campaigning his way, both virtually and in person, through key states such as Wisconsin, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. It’s believed he will deliver equally powerful retorts on Biden’s failures, targeting specifically his policies on immigration.
