President Trump Opposes Emergency Funding for USPS Due to Mail-In Voting
During a briefing yesterday afternoon, President Trump said he opposes emergency funding for the United States Postal Service. It’s no secret the USPS has been in need of more funding for years and that the pandemic has only increased their financial strain. Democrats have fought to include $25 billion for the service as part of the next coronavirus stimulus bill but they’ve been met with heavy opposition. The president claims if the service receives the money, they’ll use it to accommodate for the influx of universal mail-in voting anticipated for November’s election. Already there was a record breaking number of mail-ins during this year’s primaries. The president has criticized mail-in voting for months now, claiming it could lead to massive fraud, despite the fact that there is no historical proof of this. The president also believes it could negatively impact the GOP. This, too, has been refuted by nonpartisan experts who say neither party benefits from expanded access to mail-in voting. In a surprising move, and in spite of his obvious aversion, the president and his wife have requested to vote by mail in Florida this November.
