Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of 5-Year-Old Boy From North Carolina

A man has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a 5-year-old boy from Wilson, North Carolina. On Sunday evening, Cannon Hinnant was riding a bike in his front yard when he was shot in the head. While waiting for help to arrive, his father noticed their neighbor, 25-year-old Darius Sessoms, in the yard next door. Sessoms was reportedly holding a gun in his hand, pacing frantically. When officers arrived at the scene, Hinnant was alive but in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died from his injury. Sessoms was arrested Monday and charged yesterday with first-degree murder. Hinnant’s father said Sessoms lived next to them for years and had no history of violence or animosity. They even had drinks together the night before. The boy’s funeral also took place yesterday, drawing hundreds of community members. A public vigil scheduled for tonight has been postponed. The victim’s family hopes to hold another gathering in the next two weeks.
