Covid-19: U.S. Hits 5 Million Cases Mark Including 97,000 Children

The U.S. now makes up for almost a quarter of the world’s covid-19 cases as it surpassed 5 million yesterday.
In other terms, the U.S. has had more covid-19 cases than Ireland has people. It took the country 99 days to reach 1 million cases, 43 days to hit 2 million, 28 days for 3 million and 15 days to surpass 4 million on July 23rd. In just 17 days, that number surpassed 5 million. Of those 5 million cases, five states account for 40 percent of infections. The U.S. is also reporting the most amount of deaths globally with almost 163,000, according to John Hopkins University. The pandemic continues to show no signs of slowing as we near the fall, with around 1,000 deaths reported nearly every day since July 21st. Also alarming is the amount of cases in children that have recently been reported. According to the “American Academy of Pediatrics” and the “Children’s Hospital Association”, over 97,000 tested positive for coronavirus in the last two weeks of July for a 40% increase in child cases.
