Third Company Reveals Possible COVID-19 Vaccine with Positive Results
A third possible COVID-19 vaccine has shown early positive results of being safe to use and eliciting an immune response. Phase 1 data released by Novavax showed 131 study volunteers who received two doses of the vaccine developed neutralizing antibodies at levels more than four times higher on average than people who recovered from the virus on their own. Of 126 people who received the injection, only five people developed severe side effects which included muscle pain, nausea, and joint pain that lasted on average two days or less. One person also had a mild fever. The other twenty-five volunteers received placebo injections which did nothing. Novavax now joins Moderna and Pfizer as companies who have produced promising vaccine results. They have both moved onto phase 3 trials which consists of 30,000 volunteers each. Five other companies have also received federal funding as part of the Operation Warp Speed program in order to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
