Massive Explosion in Beirut Kills Over 100 People, Injures Thousands More
Yesterday a massive explosion at a warehouse in Lebanon’s capital Beirut killed at least a hundred people and injured thousands more. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. near a populated area in the city. President Trump claims the explosion was most likely an attack, however Beirut authorities believe the cause was the result of almost 3,000 tons of confiscated ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive material, being improperly stored in the warehouse for at least six years. It’s unconfirmed but reported that fireworks accidentally set off started a fire which led to the devastating explosion. Over a hundred people so far have been confirmed dead. That number is only expected to rise as the day continues since hundreds more are still missing. Over 4,000 people are wounded and over 300,000 people displaced after their homes were destroyed. It’s believed the explosion caused five billion dollars worth of damage. The Lebanese Prime Minister has declared three days of national mourning and a state of emergency for the next two weeks.
