1 Marine Dead, 2 Injured, 8 Still Missing After Training Accident

A search and rescue mission is underway after one marine died and eight others went missing in a training accident. The incident occurred off the southern coast of California yesterday. The service members involved were assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based out of Camp Pendleton near San Diego. They were performing a training session using an amphibious assault vehicle which is a type of armored car able to move from water to land. It’s reported a “mishap” resulted in the vehicle sinking. Of the 16 marines aboard, one is confirmed dead, at least two injured, and eight others still missing. Of those injured, one is in critical condition while the other is stable. The search remains on-going. It’s still unclear at this point what exactly caused the “mishap”. Commanding Officer Col. Christopher Bronzi said, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident. I ask that you keep our marines, sailors, and their families in your prayers as we continue our search.”
