President Trump Requests November Election be Delayed

President Trump requested earlier this morning that November’s presidential election be delayed. His tweet read, “With universal mail-in voting (not absentee voting, which is good), 2020 will be the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history. It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???” To be clear, the president has no authority to delay an election. That power rests in the hands of Congress as outlined in the Constitution. But with 96 days until the election, his recent request has already left many concerned. Earlier this week during his House Judiciary Committee hearing, Attorney General William Barr said he did not believe the upcoming election would be “rigged” but he did say “wholesale mail-in voting…substantially increases the risk of fraud.” However, there is no evidence that mail-in voting leads to fraud. Nonpartisan election experts have also said the possibility of voter fraud occurring this November is highly unlikely.
