Washington Redskins Announce Name Change, Logo Retirement

The Washington Redskins announced a change to the team’s controversial name and retirement of their current logo today. The redskins are one of the NFL’s oldest franchises. Initially named the Boston Braves when they were founded in 1932, they officially became the Redskins the following year. There have been demands in the past for the team to change its name since the term “redskins” is considered an ethnic slur and extremely derogatory towards Native American people. However, the name remained for several reasons, including the fact that it would cost around 10 million dollars to re-brand a team with an 87-year-old history. However, in light of recent protests and mounting pressure from the team’s main sponsors, including FedEx who has naming rights to their stadium, they decided their name would undergo a thorough review. Now, the team has announced they are changing their name and logo, but will not reveal the new name until trademark issues are sorted out.
